I checked the date on Mengele’s calendar located in his laboratory. It was the late summer of 1943. At this time every day, he would be drinking his cup of tea in the foyer of his laboratory. I entered the room, expecting to find him there, however, it was empty. I searched for him across the grounds; however, he was nowhere to be seen. Rumours were that SS Guards were destroying evidence about Auschwitz and that Mengele had disguised himself as a German Infantry Soldier in order to escape westwards, on the run and living under various aliases.
